The Green Place Adds CSR Strategist

The Green Place is boosting its sustainability advisory with the addition of Allison Guy, an environmental and social justice specialist, writer and editor.

An American national based in Amsterdam, Allison will leverage her global experience to formulate successful sustainability strategies for The Green Place clients.

Allison will also continue to work as a website editor, blogger and social media manager at Next Nature, a science and technology think tank.

Allison’s previous work includes online marketing and analysis for, a top-level domain registrar in New York, and research positions with environmental NGOs in Belize, the Philippines, and the United States.

Allison holds a bachelor’s in environmental studies from Yale University and a master’s in new media from the University of Amsterdam. While at the UvA, she analysed web-based environmental campaign strategies, examining how  environmental issues are framed in online communities. Her areas of expertise include fisheries issues, climate change, sustainable agriculture and food justice.

HEINEKEN Sustainability report goes live

17 April 2012 -

In April Media Wise and the Green Place made the final editorial changes to a printed summary report and more extensive official online Sustainability Report for the international brewer HEINEKEN. We supported HEINEKEN during the extensive editing and copy writing process spread over six months.

HEINEKEN decided to publish the report as an online version only, thereby adhering to its sustainable business goals.

HEINEKEN has made good progress in its sustainability journey. In the last three years the company has cut the amount of water needed to produce a liter beer by more than 15 %, to 4.3 hl. Its mission to make responsible consumption of alcohol aspirational is having a positive influence on drinking behaviours. The full sustainability report can be found here

Corio publishes its 2011 CSR Report, co-written and edited by The Green Place

Dutch-based shopping centre developer and manager Corio NV today published its 2011 CSR Report.

The report was edited by The Green Place in close consultation with Corio.

Corio takes its sustainability mission seriously and has made substantial progress in the past year.

When measuring sustainability, one size won’t fit all

Amsterdam, September 14, 2011 – When measuring sustainability, one size won’t fit all. That’s one of the conclusions of a recent Corporate Responsibility symposium held here on approaches to extending the application of Corporate Social Responsibility best practices.

Held on September 9th at The Mint Hotel, the second Green Place Symposium brought together asset managers, asset owners, regulators, analysts and CSR managers to discuss the topic “Mainstreaming ESG: Creating a winning formula for the triple bottom line”. Discussion points included whether a standard for following ESG criteria was possible and what upcoming legislation on a regional European level we can expect.

The Green Place @ Media Wise helps campaign to heal the world

Mediawise has recently been working with, an NGO in Amsterdam that is striving to make the world a better place by helping brands see the true value of altruism. The founder, Mark Woerde, recently commissioned research to help support his belief that most people are altruistic and looking for brands that can help them to help others. The results, from over 24,000 participants across 16 countries, help prove that there’s great potential for brands that act prosocially as a majority of people favour them over standard brands. The research affirms that doing good can be good business, something Letsheal hopes will turn the power of brands and marketing into a force. Media Wise has helped with editing the book Mark wrote on the research entitled “How Advertising Will Heal The World and Your Business” and getting media coverage for the story.

Green Place Symposium: An inspirational launch

The Green Place Symposium, a series of intimate CSR oriented gatherings, was successfully launched on April 15, 2011. The first Symposium was a discussion on the role of leadership buy-in to successfully embed CSR into a company. Top managers discussed how they get their stakeholders on board to embed CSR into their company. They talked about who the key players are in their organization that need to be on board and what difficulties they have encountered.

The speakers included the heads of sustainability at Akzo Nobel and Philips, André Veneman and Henk de Bruin, the Managing Director of engineering firm Witteveen +Bos, Henk Nieboer, and TNT Group CEO Peter Bakker. Show more

Unilever is voted most sustainable company by CSR managers

18 April 2011 -

Anglo-Dutch consumer products manufacturer Unilever was voted most sustainable company of the Netherlands in a survey of CSR managers by The Green Place.

The respondents, 52.4% of which were CSR specialists, 9.5% in senior management and 38.1% in corporate communications, were mainly based in the Netherlands.

The Green Owl Award survey, held between March 15 and April 13, posed three main questions:

  1. Which companies do you consider have the best reputation for being sustainable?
  2. Which companies would you rate as the most mature in terms of embedding CSR into their corporate practices?
  3. In your view, which company scores most highly in terms of its CSR reputation, policies and maturity?

Media Wise launches The Green Place lunch symposium

18 April 2011 -

On April 15, around 30 CSR managers attended the first lunch symposium to be held by The Green Place, Media Wise’s Corporate Responsibility programme.

The topic was leadership in CSR and the four main speakers were TNT CEO Peter Bakker, Philips’ global head of sustainability Henk de Bruin, the CEO of engineering consulting firm Witteveen + Bos, Henk Nieboer and the global head of sustainbility at Akzo Nobel, Andre Veneman.

The event was held at the historic greenhouse restaurant, De Kas, which takes a sustainable approach to catering, whereby it grows vegetables on site and uses local and biological produce. The results of a CSR survey by The Green Place were revealed at the lunch and a Green Owl award was presented to the company which, in the view of respondents, had achieved the most mature status of sustainability in its policies, organisation and reputation.

The Green Place gets a new editorial assistant

Bob Mulder joined The Green Place in January 2011 as an editorial assistant. Bob will contribute to current projects like the creation of
a database of CSR-related research and news articles for clients. He is also helping put together an annual schedule of CSR events for clients. When not working on CSR, Bob works as desk editor, writer, researcher and proof reader. Bob holds dual British and Dutch nationalities and a BA in Comparative Literature from Goldsmith’s College, part of London University.

Oce Stakeholder Dialogue: historic greenhouse becomes ideas hot house

Amsterdam University College is a new university that launched this year, following in the successful footsteps of similar colleges in Utrecht, Middelburg and Maastricht. The Amsterdam college offers a similar broad liberal arts degree to students from all over the world, in English, but has a differentiating focus: science.
